GOVERNANCE

ABTA Members themselves form the policy-making and enforcement machinery of ABTA. The Board of Directors, Council of Regions, regional representatives, and a number of committees and working groups are supported in their work by a professional secretariat of some 60 staff.

Board of Directors

Broadly speaking, the function of the Board of Directors is to promote the interests of Members and to exercise the regulatory powers that are set out in the Articles of Association and Code of Conduct. It also manages ABTA’s affairs and represents ABTA in its overall dealings with the outside world. In considering matters which directly affect the interests of Members, the Board takes into account the views of the Council of Regions.

Council of Regions

The Council of Regions (CoR) acts as a channel of communication between ABTA Members and the Board of Directors. It works to identify and resolve issues that affect the membership at large, and it encourages involvement with ABTA at a local level. The Council of Regions is made up of elected representatives from each of the ten ABTA regions and Scotland.

Regional Representatives

ABTA’s membership extends throughout the British Isles. A regional network of ten regions plus Scotland makes it easier for Members to meet each other without having to travel to ABTA’s offices in London.

Elected regional representatives are in touch with the Members in their area and convey their views to the Council of Regions. They also organise social and educational events.

There's more about the ABTA regions, including details of regional representatives and what's happening in the regions, in the Members' area of this site.

Committees and Working Groups

Two standing committees manage matters relating to ABTA’s membership rules. The Membership committee oversees the Accounts rules, and the Code of Conduct committee oversees the Code. Both committees are made up of Members of ABTA, and their responsibilities include considering breaches of the rules, and ensuring that both sets of rules remain relevant, proportionate, and fair.

Other ABTA committees work to develop trade relations across the travel industry and to address travel industry issues on behalf of Members. Members with expertise in given areas are encouraged to join these groups. For details, contact the press office on 020 3117 0596.

Travel Industry Partners

Travel Industry Partners are represented by an elected steering group, which works to strengthen the link between ABTA Members and their suppliers. There's more about the Travel Industry Partner Steering Group in the Members' area of this site.

Secretariat

ABTA’s Secretariat operates from the company’s offices in London. Some 60 members of staff work to provide Members with services and to represent their interests, as well as administering the membership systems.
